Today I was invited to speak to delegates from Greater Boston Labor Council (GBLC) at their annual BBQ in Dorchester. Below is my statement given to the delegates. If you would like to see my responses to their questionnaire, click here.
"A city that builds up its workers builds its future. I've seen first hand how unions contribute to workers dignity - my husband is a member of SENA 888 and as former chief of staff for the city's law department I've had the pleasure of working alongside SENA and SEIU members.
I've spent my career fighting for people. At a startup taking advantage of financially unsavvy young people I successfully pushed for 401ks and ensured adequate parental leave was given. I've spoken out against sexual harassment being taught by directors to staff straight out of college. At the city I fixed three years of underpaid salaries because management and HR didn't acknowledge years of experience - paying people what they're worth.
I believe in an economy where every Bostonian thrives. Affordable housing sized for families. Institutions paying their fair share of the PILOT program. City departments being fully staffed and adequately managed to serve our constituents.
It's time for change, to stand up. At Fenway, at City Hall, and at the Newbury Comics warehouse in my district which has participated in union busting. It's time to stand up for our families futures and right to work, live, and succeed in Boston."
